The Granularity of Process Breakdown Reveals Process Control
Check whether each process is listed separately in the quotation. If it breaks down into CNC turning, CNC milling, turn-mill, secondary operations, and surface treatment, it indicates the shop has complete in-house process planning capabilities. If the entire quote only shows a single line for "machining cost," buyers should be cautious: the supplier may be outsourcing the processes and only handling assembly or simple post-treatment in-house. For OEM buyers who need to move from prototyping to mass production, the transparency of the process breakdown directly affects the predictability of lead times and costs.
Four Fields Worth Special Attention on a Quotation
Equipment Brand and Number of Axes
Whether it specifies brands such as BROTHER or MAZAK, and specifications for 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis, or Swiss-type lathes, reflecting the geometric complexity the shop can handle.
Material Designations and Specifications
Whether it lists specific grades such as 6061, 304, S45C, or C3604, rather than just "aluminum" or "copper," indicating the shop's understanding of material properties.
Tolerances and Surface Roughness
Whether it specifies Ra values and tolerance classes, such as ±0.02mm or Ra 0.8. Being able to provide specific numbers indicates confidence in process limits.
Inspection Process Items
Whether it lists specific content for incoming, in-process, and final inspections, such as CMM measurement and visual inspection criteria, which relates to the implementation level of the ISO 9001 system.
Price Is Not the Only Signal—Details Matter
When two shops quote with a price difference of more than 20%, buyers should not only look at the price level but return to the details of the quotations to compare: whether the process breakdown is reasonable, whether the equipment can actually machine the part, and whether the inspection items are in place. The clearer the quotation, the lower the risk of issues in subsequent communication and lead time management. For Tier-1 suppliers and prototyping development teams, this transparency is often more valuable than the unit price.
